Justice Gertrude Torkornoo advocates for stronger tools to enhance work ethics and productivity in Ghanaian institutions

Supreme Court Judge, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, has emphasized the importance of utilizing clear communication, accepted regulation, ethics, and technology to improve work ethics and productivity in Ghanaian institutions.

Speaking at the 6th International Labour Day Public lecture organized by the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and the Institute of Work, Employment and Society (IWES), she highlighted the need for a culture of strong communication that actively communicates mission and vision statements.

Justice Torkornoo stressed the importance of law and regulation in motivating and mobilizing standards of behavior that lead to a desirable organizational culture. She also recommended the deployment of relevant technology for efficient use within the workplace. Justice Torkornoo said that technology must be carefully designed and deployed, supported by strong institutional ethical cooperation and support to achieve increased productivity.

Additionally, Dr. Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, Director of the Labor Research and Policy Institute, Trade Union Congress, identified the issue of attitude as a major challenge in various organizations. According to Dr. Otoo, if the right attitude is cultivated, Ghana’s revenue can triple, and the government can pay workers. For her part, Dr. Mrs. Mary N. Essiaw, Director of IWES, emphasized the need to protect incomes and pensions in the country. She was hopeful that the lecture would inspire high ethical values in all workplaces.

The lecture brought together justices of the superior courts, staff and students of UPSA, the Trades Union Congress, and the Clergy. According to Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, Pro Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, the lecture is a testament to the university’s commitment to academic excellence and intellectual discourse. He expressed gratitude to all workers and hoped that the lecture would inspire them to pursue excellence in their respective fields.

For the most part, Justice Torkornoo’s recommendations highlight the need for a culture of clear communication, regulation, ethics, and technology in the workplace to improve productivity. It is up to organizations and individuals to embrace and implement these tools to create the desired organizational culture.
